Women's soccer cruises to home win over Elmhurst

ROCK ISLAND -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team found themselves back in the win column on Wednesday, defeating the visiting Elmhurst Bluejays at Thorson-Lucken Field by a score of 3-0.

Maeve Sheridan struck first for the Vikings in the 18th minute, taking a pass from Liesl Whitener to give Augie the early 1-0 lead. The one-goal differential stood firm for nearly 20 minutes until Whitener connected on the team's second score, sending one into the back of the net unassisted. Augustana lead 2-0 after 45 minutes of action and held a 9-1 advantage in shots in the opening half.

Augie continued their offensive pressure in the second half, boasting another wide margin in shots at 12-2. The Vikings saw their third and final goal come with around 12 minutes remaining as Abby DeGustino collected a missed shot off of the crossbar and passed it inward to Kayla Garcia, who then tallied her seventh goal of the season. The 3-0 score stayed in tact until the end as Augustana earned their fifth straight win over Elmhurst.

The Vikings out-shot the Bluejays 21-3 in the contest, led by six apiece from Garcia and Kim Vulic. Starting goalkeeper Janey Castoe had two saves, while Anjelica Ortiz tallied one.

With the win, Augie improves to 7-5-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the CCIW. The team will be back at home on Saturday, October 15 when they host the Adrian Bulldogs. Start time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
