Men's soccer earns road shutout over Coe

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team picked up their second consecutive win Wednesday night, defeating the Coe Kohawks on the road by a score of 2-0.

It was an uneventful opening half as both teams played the first 45 minutes to a scoreless tie. The first shot attempt of the game did not come until nearly 15 minutes, seeing a Sebastian Gabrielson attempt go wide left. The Vikings maintained the pressure throughout the half, posting their first shot on target just a few minutes later. After one half of play, Augustana out-shot Coe 7-3. All three of the Kohawks' attempts were on target in the opening frame.

The Vikings broke the scoreless tie after some high-intensity play to begin the second half. Augie quickly jumped out to two shots within the first 90 seconds, both missing high by Gabrielson. In the 58th minute, the freshman finally saw one go through, sending one in the net in the lower right corner to give the Vikings the 1-0 advantage. The score was good for Gabrielson's second of the season. Later in the half, with just over one minute remaining, Augustana added an insurance score on a Brandon Knapp score off of an assist from Gabrielson. The Vikings went on to win the game at that same score of 2-0.

Shots fell in favor of the Vikings in the second half alone by a margin of 12-5, more than doubling up the Cohawks for the game at 19-8 overall. Over half (10) of the Augustana shots were on target. Frankie Baio finished a perfect 5/5 on saves in net for the Vikings. Gabrielson led the way on offense with eight shots. Knapp was next in line with four.

With the win, Augustana improves to 2-1 on the young season. The victory also makes it four straight wins over Coe, having not allowed a goal in any of those four meetings. The team will remain on the road for their next game on Saturday, September 11th when they travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. to take on the Marian Sabres. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
