Baumgartner's hat trick leads Augustana over Rockford

Jarrett Baumgartner scored three goals to help lead the Vikings to a win in their home opener

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Jarrett Baumgartner made it a memorable home debut as a member of the Augustana Vikings men's soccer team Saturday night, helping lead his team to a win over the visiting Rockford Regents by a final score of 3-0 from inside Thorson-Lucken Field.

The freshman scored all three goals for the Vikings, with the first coming in the 26th minute as he knocked in a pass from teammate Sebastian Gabrielson to make it 1-0 in their favor. That score remained the same through the rest of the first half into intermission. Augustana ended the first half outshooting Rockford 7-3. Both teams tallied two shots on target in the opening 45 minutes.

Augie continued to hold offensive pressure on the Regents in the second half, controlling the ball for majority of the game. Just 12 minutes in, Baumgartner connected on his second score of the night, taking one in unassisted to double the team's advantage. Overall, the Vikings out-shot the Regents 15-5 in the second half alone, pushing their margin for the game to plus-14. Augie posted a 9-4 advantage in the shots on goal category, with all four of Rockford's being saved by Vikings goalkeeper Frankie Baio, who played all 90 minutes in net.

The Vikings added one more to their total in the 75th minute when Hannes Hemgren quickly sent one to the near side to Baumgartner on a free kick. The freshman midfielder then sent a cross right in front of the net to a cutting teammate in Tyler Markell, forcing a Rockford defender to make a desperate attempt to intercept the ball but instead resulting in a deflection into the net to credit Baumgartner his third goal of the contest. The Vikings held the lead for the final 15 minutes and closed it out with a 3-0 final.

With the win, Augustana improves to 1-1 on the season. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, September 8th when they take on Coe on the road. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
