WHEATON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was bested by the Wheaton Thunder on Wednesday, falling by a score of 2-0 on the road in the their first conference contest of the season.
Augie withstood a barrage of shot attempts from the home team in this one, with the final tally at 32-10 in favor of the Thunder. Despite a 13-2 disparity in that category in the first 45 minutes, the Vikings held the Thunder to just one goal scored, which came in the 15th minute of action. Augustana entered intermission with just the one-goal deficit.
Wheaton continued to keep the pressure on as the second half brought 19 more shots for the Thunder. The home team successfully pushed another one through about ten minutes into the second frame to double their lead, but the Augie defense kept them in the game as they did not allow another goal the rest of the night. On offense, Augustana secured six shots in the second half, but were unable to see any go into the net as they fell 2-0 after 90 minutes of play.
Sebastian Gabrielson accounted for half of the Vikings' shots in this one, putting up four of the eight total team attempts.
Brandon Knapp was next in line with two. Gabrielson had the two shots on target for Augie as well. In goal,
Frankie Baio had a busy night, saving eight Wheaton shots.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 4-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play. The team will return home for their next game on Saturday, October 2nd when they host Millikin in another CCIW matchup. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
