ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated by the visiting Millikin Big Blue from inside Thorson-Lucken Field on Saturday, falling by a score of 2-1 in the team's first conference home game of the season.
The Big Blue struck first in this one 21 minutes in as they pushed one into the back of the net to take the early advantage. The Vikings held an advantage in shots at 5-3 through the first 45 minutes of action, but Millikin successfully converted on one of their few attempts to hold the one-goal lead at the break.
In the 58th minute, Augie equalized the game on a
Tyler Markell goal off of a pass from
Jarrett Baumgartner. Less than one minute later, Millikin responded with another score to move the score back up in their favor. The Vikings continued to get good looks on the Big Blue side of the field, almost doubling up their opponent in shots for the full 90 minutes, but were unable to send through the game-tying shot once again as the visitors held on for the 2-1 victory. Augustana outshot Millikin 12-7 for the game, with half of their attempts coming on target.
Baumgartner led the offensive attack for the Vikings in shots with four, two on goal, while Markell had three total shots and two on the mark.
Frankie Baio had two saves in net.
With the loss, Augie drops to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play. The team will be back in action on Wednesday, October 6th when they welcome in the North Central Cardinals to Thorson-Lucken Field. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
