ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team earned their second straight win overall and fourth shutout of the season on Wednesday, defeating the visiting Monmouth Fighting Scots by a score of 2-0 from inside Thorson-Lucken Field.
The game was on track to be a first half of scoreless action as both teams saw nearly 40 minutes of play with no goals scored and limited shot attempts. In the 39th minute, the Vikings got on the board with a
Sebastian Gabrielson goal on an assist from
Justin Kornas. The score was good for Gabrielson's third of the season. Less than four minutes later, Augie added another one right before the end of the half on a
Johannes Chammas strike into the back of the net on a through ball from
Hannes Hemgren. The Vikings held a 7-3 advantage in the shot category after 45 minutes of action.
Augustana continued to put on the pressure in the second half, adding eight more shots to their tally while holding the Scots to just one. Three of the four Monmouth shots in the contest were on target, but Vikings goalie
Frankie Baio tallied three saves on the night. The last offensive threat for Monmouth came in the 77th minute when their shot bottom-center was saved. They did not record a shot in the final 13-plus minutes.
Gabrielson led Augie with three shots on the night, followed by two apiece from Chammas,
Tyler Markell, and
Jarrett Baumgartner. Gabrielson also had a team-high two shots on target.
The win for the Vikings improves them to 4-2 on the season. All four of their wins have come via shutout, giving Baio four on the season in goal. The team will begin CCIW play in their next game on Saturday, September 25th when they host the Carroll Pioneers. Start time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
