INDIANOLA, Iowa – Augustana women's soccer (3-3) dropped a narrow 2-1 contest at Simpson College tonight. The loss moved the Vikings' overall record to an even .500 mark.
Augie and Simpson played a mostly even match, especially through the first half. After the initial 45-minute period, the game remained scoreless.
Following the mid-game break, Simpson eventually struck first in the 75
th-minute. Hailey Kowzan was assisted by Jordyn Foelske for the first goal of the game, and her third of the season. Just moments later, in the 78
th-minute, Lizzie Arnburg assisted a Liz Naasz goal to extend Simpson's lead to 2-0.
The trailing Viking squad did attempt a brief comeback effort with a
Liesl Whitener goal in the 81
st-minute, but Augustana's late charge was not enough as the 2-1 score held through the final horn.
Simpson not only outscored the Vikings, but also outshot Augie 20-19 overall and 9-4 in attempts on goal. Whitener and
Kayla Garcia made four shots each with a combined three on target.
Lexi Dominguez,
Maeve Sheridan, and
Madison Brusven all added one shot apiece.
In goal,
Janey Castoe played the entire length of the match for Augie and recorded seven total saves.
Augustana women's soccer will attempt to climb above the .500 mark when they begin CCIW play in their next match. The Vikings will host Carroll on Saturday, Sept. 25 at 1:00 P.M. in Rock Island.
