ROCK ISLAND, Ill --
Nick Dispensa drove in a goal in the 105th minute and the Augustana men's soccer team earned a double overtime win Saturday night over the visiting Knox Prairie Fire by a score of 1-0 to push them over .500 on the season.
The Vikings (3-2) withstood on onslaught of offensive pressure throughout the game as they were outshot 20-7 on the night. Through 45 minutes of action, both teams played through a scoreless tie, with the Prairie Fire (1-4) holding a 5-2 advantage in that category.
In the second, it was more of the same as Knox once again saw high volume shots on the Augie end, posting nine in the second half alone compared to the Vikings' four. This time around, the Prairie Fire saw more of their attempts on target than they did in the first, but the Vikings continued to fend off each attack and keep the game tied throughout the remainder of regulation. Goalkeeper
Frankie Baio collected four saves in the second half to help push the game to overtime.
In the first extra period, Knox tallied three shots and held Augustana to none, but after ten minutes of action neither team could find the back of the net. The Prairie Fire began the second overtime session with three more shots to add to their total, but Baio tallied a save on all three to keep the Vikings in contention. In the 105th minute, Dispensa took advantage of an opportunity on the Knox side of the field, striking a ball just outside the box into the top left corner of the goal to end the game and give Augie a 1-0 victory.
Dispensa, along with teammate
Sebastian Gabrielson, led the Vikings with two shots apiece. Each had one on target as well. Baio had a collegiate-best eight saves to help earn the team their third shutout of the year.
With the win, Augustana improves to 3-2 on the season. The Vikings are back in action on Wednesday, September 22nd when they host the Monmouth Fighting Scots. Start time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Thorson-Lucken Field.
