Women's soccer falls to undefeated Trine

ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Augustana Vikings women's soccer team fell in a close battle with the undefeated Trine Thunder on Saturday, defeated on the road by a score of 1-0.

It was a scoreless opening first half for both teams as the Vikings (3-2) continued to fend off relentless pressure from the home team, seeing ten shots in the first half alone. Janey Castoe came up with three saves in the first 45 minutes to help keep the Thunder (7-0-1) off of the scoreboard. On offense, Augie mustered four shot attempts in the first half, with one on target. The Vikings did not record a shot in the final 11 minutes of action in the opening frame.

Within the first two minutes of the second half, the Thunder continued their offensive pressure, putting up two shots on goal that were both stopped by Castoe. In the 56th minute, Trine got one through to put the home team on top by a score of 1-0. That score remained all the way to the final whistle as Trine held on for the narrow victory. Castoe finished with six saves in the contest for Augie.

It was a much more balanced second half outside of the lone score, as the Vikings held a shot advantage for majority of the half, ending the final 45 minutes with a 7-5 advantage in that category. Trine held the overall margin in shots at 15-11 and 7-5 in shots on target. Augustana saw three shots in the final 15 minutes of action, two of them on goal, but those were saved by the Thunder's goalkeeper as they successfully fended off the late pressure from the Vikings.

Anna Bross led Augustana with three shots. Savanna Birkey and Carsen Kekelik were close behind with two apiece. Bross and Birkey also had two shots on goal.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 3-2 on the season. The team will be back in action on Tuesday, September 21st when they remain on the road to take on the Simpson Storm. Start time is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Indianola, Iowa.
