ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana women's soccer battled a gritty Knox College team to a 1-0 victory tonight. The lone goal of the contest came midway through the second half and proved to be just enough for the Vikings.
The first half of the match was tightly contested as both teams struggled to settle in. The Prairie Fire outshot Augie 7-2 in the first half, but neither team could break through.
After the halftime break, the Augustana offense found its rhythm, and eventually found the net. In the 64
th-minute,
Molly Fank connected on a header towards the goal off an Augustana free kick. Fank's shot was blocked, however, but eventually found its way home.
Maeve Sheridan collected the blocked shot and delivered the only score of the game.
The Vikings dominated the offensive play in the second period with 18 shots compared to Knox's four.
In goal, both keepers had solid nights. For the Prairie Fire, Carina Escobar allowed just the one score and made six saves. For Augustana,
Janey Castoe made seven saves, including two clutch rejections in the game's waning minutes.
The Vikings will be on the road for their next match when they visit Trine University on Saturday, Sept. 18.
