Nadia Ranieri (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) and Emilie Gist put up zeros for the first 3½ innings in the opener.
Gist retired the first two batters in the fourth, but a walk to
Sydney Ohrtmann (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) sparked a three-run Augustana outburst. Freshman
Morgan Bielfeldt (St. Viator HS, Chicago, Ill.) singled in Ohrtmann with the game's first run and
Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added a two-run single to center later in the frame.
Olivia Blood (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) drew a one-out walk in the fourth and scored on
Claire Weeks' (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) two-out single to center to put the Vikings up 4-0.
Wheaton got to Ranieri for a pair of runs in the sixth and loaded the bases in the seventh, but the freshman southpaw got Gist to ground to
Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva Ill.) at third for a game-ending fielder's choice.
Ranieri (5-6) scattered seven hits, walked two and fanned six for the win. Gist (8-13) went the distance for the Thunder.
Bielfeldt and
Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) each had two hits.
AUGUSTANA 11, WHEATON 0
Augustana got plenty of offense and a strong pitching performance from junior
Shaye Arwood (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) to claim the nightcap in five innings.
The Vikings jumped on Alese Antonello for six runs in the top of the second. Weeks got things started with a leadoff single. Ohrtmann and
