Vikings extend winning streak to six with Senior Day sweep of North Central

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Augustana swept its third doubleheader in as many days Sunday, taking down North Central by scores of 5-4 and 6-1 on Senior Day at Carver Field. Coach Kris Kistler's club improved to 13-25 on the season and 10-20 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals dropped to 20-18 overall and 16-16 in the conference. The Vikings open CCIW Tournament play on Thursday, May 6, taking on Elmhurst in Decatur, Illinois.

AUGUSTANA 5, NORTH CENTRAL 4

Three times North Central scored to take the lead in the opener and each time Augustana tied it in the bottom of the inning. Finally, after reliever Amanda Page (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) held the Cardinals scoreless in the top of the sixth, Sydney Ohrtmann's (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) two-out RBI single in the bottom half gave the Vikings a 5-4 lead. Page then pitched around a two-out triple in the bottom of the seventh to close out the win.

Katie Del Re's leadoff single and an RBI groundout by Emily Miller put North Central up 1-0 after a half inning. Augustana answered in the bottom half, getting singles from Tristan Bautista (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.), Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Nadia Ranieri (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.). Ranieri's scored Bautista with the tying run.

Each team added a run in the third. Miller singled in pinch-runner Amanda Martinez for the Cardinals and Bautista scored again, this time on Claire Weeks' (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) RBI single to right.

North Central scored twice in the top of the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Vikings tied it again in the bottom half. Ohrtmann drew a leadoff walk and Ranieri and Weeks came through with RBI singles.

Jennica Soliz (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch-hit infield hit. She was erased on Nichole Nash's (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) fielder's choice, but one out later, Ohrtmann singled Nash in with the go-ahead run.

Page threw the final two innings and got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season. Starter Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) went the first five frames and allowed six hits and four runs, two of which were earned. Gianna Corban (11-10) suffered the loss.

Bautista, Ranieri and Weeks were all 2-for-3 at the plate. Bautista scored twice and Ranieri and Weeks each drove in a pair.

AUGUSTANA 6, NORTH CENTRAL 1

In game two, Smith allowed just two hits in five scoreless innings and Nash went 3-for-4 with two RBI to lead Kistler's crew to its sixth win in three days.

Cardinal starter Breanna Adams shut Augustana out through three innings. The Vikings threatened in the third, but Smith lined into an inning-ending unassisted double play with the bases loaded. They got to Adams for a run in the fourth and three in the fifth however.

Ranieri reached on an error leading off the fourth and scored on Nash's one-out single. Another North Central error started the fifth and Olivia Blood (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.), Smith and Nash all had RBI singles in the inning to make it 4-0.

Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) scored on an error in the sixth and a Weeks single and Nash's RBI double in the seventh made it 6-0.

North Central plated an unearned run off reliever Shaye Arwood (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final.

Smith (3-8) got the win, while Adams (7-6) took the loss.
