ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan raced to an 10-1 lead in the first 17 minutes Saturday and went on to defeat Augustana 19-4 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 4-5 on the season and 0-1 in the CCIW, while the Titans moved to 7-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Riley Rooney scored three times as IWU jumped on top 5-1 in the first six minutes. Augustana's first goal came from
Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.), with an assist from
Margaret Cecilio (Archbidhop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.).
Three consecutive Maggie Torres goals pushed the Titan lead to 8-1 with 18 minutes remaining in the first half. Scores by Landry Elliott and Cassandra Jones extended the advantage to 10-1 before Cecilio assisted on a
Sydney Rector (Fishers HS, Fishers, Ind.) goal.
Freshman
Brooke Borchart (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) added a free position goal at 7:16, but IWU tallied the final three goals of the half to lead 14-3 at the break. Rooney's fourth of the half triggered the running clock with 3:23 left.
Hettiger opened the second-half scoring off an assist from
Sandra Pielechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.), but five different Titans scored the final five goals of the afternoon.
Hettiger had two goals and Cecilio a pair of assists for the Vikings. Cecilio also controlled three draws and
Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) collected four ground balls.
Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded eight saves in goal.
Rooney finished with five goals, Elliott four and Torres and Jones three apiece. Rooney and Torres each had two assists. Goalies Janaye Godfrey and Rebecca Rymarcsuk combined for four saves.
Next up for Coach C.J. Holder's squad is a Wednesday, April 7 home date versus North Central. First draw at Thorson-Lucken is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
