ROCK ISLAND, Ill.—North Central's Annabelle Steiner scored with 1:30 to play Friday to lift her team to an 11-10 victory over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 5-6 on the season and 0-2 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals improved to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
Steiner's goal culminated a rally from a 6-3 deficit with 24 minutes to play.
Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) scored off an assist from
Sandra Pielechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) with 24:10 remaining to give Augustana that three-goal margin.
Reese McMullen's answer at the 23:24 mark sparked the Cardinals' comeback and Steiner added six of their last seven goals. She scored twice a minute apart to tie it at six with 19½ minutes left.
Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) and
Brooke Borchart (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) had goals less than a minute apart to put the Vikings back on top 8-6, but Steiner did the same to tie it again at the 13:40 mark.
Sinclaire Lucero (Helix HS, Lemon Grove, Calif.) gave the hosts their last lead (9-8) with a man-up goal at 12:08. Berit Vandenbroucke's free position goal with 8:10 to play tied it and Steiner added one of her own two minutes later to put North Central up 10-9. Cecilio tied it one final time with a goal at 4:13, but Steiner tallied the game-winner with a minute and a half left.
Hettiger controlled the ensuing draw, but Cecilio's shot in the final 30 seconds went wide.
Steiner scored twice as the Cardinals led 3-1 at the midway point of the first half. Cecilio and Hettiger scored twice and Borchart and Pielechaty had two assists apiece as Augustana responded with five straight goals over a period of 20 minutes.
Cecilio finished with four goals, an assist and a team-high four ground balls. Borchart had two goals and two assists, Hettiger two goals and Pielechaty a goal and two assists. Cecilio and Hettiger each controlled three draws and
Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) had a pair of caused turnovers.
Steiner tallied eight goals, while her sister Grace had a game-high five caused turnovers.
In goal, Augustana's
Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded nine saves and North Central's Abigail Widd had 11.
It's a quick turnaround for Coach C.J. Holder's bunch, as it heads to Kenosha, Wisconsin for a date with Carthage on Saturday, April 17.
