Vikings swept at Millikin


DECATUR, Ill.. – Two Millikin hurlers combined on a no-hitter in game one Friday and the Big Blue scored six runs in the seventh inning of the nightcap to complete a doubleheader sweep of Augustana at Workman Field. The Vikings fell to 3-13 on the season and 0-8 in the CCIW, while Millikin improved to 12-6 overall and 9-3 in the league.

Aly Armstrong went the first four innings and Charly Warlow threw the fifth to complete the no-hitter in an opener shortened to five frames by the mercy rule.
 
The Big Blue scored nine in the bottom of the first, knocking out Augustana starter Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) in the process. Gretchen Gould's two-run single and Skielyr Trenkle's two-run triple were the big hits.
 
Millikin added a run in the second, three in the third and five in the fourth.
 
Armstrong got the win, moving to 7-2 on the year. Peine (0-4) suffered the loss.
 
MILLIKIN 9, AUGUSTANA 2
 
Big Blue starter Addison Sargent limited the Vikings to one hit through five shutout innings before leaving with a 3-0 lead in the nightcap. However, Augustana got to reliever Bailey Coffman for two runs in the sixth.
 
Sydney Ohrtmann (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) and Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) reached on consecutive errors to start the frame. Freshman Ashlyn Mathers (Pomona HS, Westminster, Colo.) followed with a two-run double down the right field line, but was thrown out at third trying to stretch it into a triple. Coffman retired the next two batters to maintain the 3-2 Millikin lead.
 
The Big Blue put the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh. Gould's two-run double to left center was the big hit.
 
Coffman pitched around another error in the bottom of the inning to earn the save.
 
Sargent got the win to move to 3-2 on the season. Viking starter Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) fell to 1-4 with the loss.
 
Augustana is back in action on Saturday, April 3, hosting Carroll in a 1:00 pm. twin bill at Carver Field.
