Vikings fall 15-3 at Carthage

Junior Margaret Cecilio scored the Vikings first goal on Saturday.

KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana was unable to survive a seven goal onslaught at the beginning of the game and fell to Carthage by a score of 15-3 on Saturday, April 17 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings went to 5-7 overall and 0-3 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with the loss while Carthage moved to 4-6 and 1-3.
 
Less than 24 hours after dropping an 11-10 heartbreaker to North Central, head coach C.J. Durham's club was unable to overcome a slow start. The Firebirds got two goals from Hanna Holloway in the first five minutes of the game and were never headed.
 
It was 7-0  before the first half was halfway over before junior Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) scored on a free position shot to break the streak. The Vikings also got a goal from junior Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) with just :58 left in the first half off an assist by junior Sydney Rector (Fisher HS, Fisher, Ind.) to make it 9-2 at intermission.
 
Senior Sandra Pielechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored the final goal for Augustana with 11:09 left in the game and it was unassisted.
 
Statistically the Vikings were outshot 28-20 by Carthage and edged in ground balls 28-26. The Firebirds won the draw control battle 11-10. Augustana struggled with clears, converting on just 13 of 26 while the home team made 18 of 21.
 
Hettiger led the team in ground balls with six while Pielechaty added five. Cecilio won five draw controls.
 
Augustana's next game is Tuesday, April 20 at the University of Chicago and the starting time is 6:00 p.m.
