DUBUQUE, Iowa – Augustana erased a 4-2 deficit with a 10-1 run Wednesday and went on to a 12-7 victory over Dubuque at Oyen Field. The Vikings improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Spartans fell to 4-6.
After goals by
Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Elijah Graesser (Wauwatosa West HS, Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the guests an early 2-0 advantage, Dubuque responded with four straight over a 7½-minute stretch. Zach Schmitt scored the first Spartan goal and his second assist of the night, on a goal by Will Robinson, helped put the hosts up 4-2 early in the second quarter.
The score stayed that way until 6:36 of the second period when
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) scored to get the Vikings within a goal.
Steve Robertson tied it 11 seconds later off an assist from
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) and another unassisted Teschke goal put Augustana up 5-4.
Steve Robertson assisted brother
Bob Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and then
Carson Ghys (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) on goals in the last two minutes, as
Dan Torie's bunch took a 7-4 advantage to halftime.
Matt Pierson (Montini Catholic HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) opened the second half scoring with the Vikings a man down and a Graesser tally midway through the third quarter made it seven goals in a row for Augustana a 9-4 lead. A Ben Farrady goals slowed the onslaught temporarily, but
Jack Preston (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.),
Rocco Boggio (Waukesha West HS, Waukesha, Wis.) and
Sam Shaver (Kettle Moraine HS, Delafield, Wis.) answered to put the Vikings up 12-5 early in the fourth quarter.
Tyler Phipps wrapped up the evening's scoring with a pair of late goals for Dubuque.
Steve Robertson paced a balanced Augustana attack with two goals and two assists. Teschke and Graesser scored twice as well and
Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge Ill.) dished out a pair of assists. Calabrese won 16 of 23 faceoffs and snagged a game-high 12 ground balls.
Paul Huber (Oak Park & River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.) had five caused turnovers and Pierson four.
Cameron Duffy (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) recorded nine saves in goal, while Ryan Gartner had 11 for the Spartans.
Next up for Torie's bunch is a 1:00 p.m. contest versus Carroll Saturday, April 17 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
