SoftballCarthageJannaGeorge
Janna George races home with a run in the fifth inning of game two against Carthage.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana could manage just seven hits and two runs in 14 innings against three Carthage pitchers as the Firebirds scored a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sweep on Monday, April 12 at Carver Field. This twin-bill was originally supposed to be played on Saturday but was postponed due to heavy rain in the Quad City area.

Carthage won each game by identical scores of 6-1.

GAME 1: Carthage 6, Augustana 1
Carthage used a six run second inning off Viking starter Nadia Ranieri to break this (Riverside Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) to break the game open. In that innings the Firebirds pounded Ranieri for five hits and all six of the runs they would score in the game.

Augustana managed just one hit of Carthage starter Stefanie Guercio before she gave way to Maddie Conway. The Vikings touched Conway for ta single run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Senior Third baseman Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) scored on an error in the outfield off a ball hit well by senior second baseman Tristan Bautista (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.).

GAME 2: Carthage 6, Augustana 1
Once again the story was the Carthage pitching as starter Ellie Bernero went the distance and scattered three hits in a 6-1 victory. The Firebirds scored first with a single run in the bottom of the second off Viking starter Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.).

Augustana tied the game in the top of the fifth when pinch runner Janna George (Resurrection College Prep, Chicago, Ill.) raced home on a two out single by junior shortstop Josie Smith (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Wheaton, Ill.).

In the bottom of the inning Carthage scored five runs and that proved to be decisive.
