ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Junior
Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and freshman
Nadia Ranieri (Riverside-Brookfield HS, North Riverside, Ill.) made significant contributions with both their arms and bats Sunday, as Augustana swept a doubleheader from North Park by scores of 11-1 and 1-0 at Carver Field. The hosts improved to 6-18 on the season and 3-13 in the CCIW, while the guests fell to 14-12 and 8-12, respectively. Coach
Kris Kistler's squad is scheduled to face Illinois Wesleyan in a 4:00 p.m. twin bill in Bloomington, Illinois on Wednesday, April 21.
AUGUSTANA 11, NORTH PARK 1
Smith went the full five innings in opener, scattering seven hits and walking none while going 4-for-4 with four RBI at the plate.
Nichole Nash (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) and
Tristan Bautista (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) started the bottom of the first with singles and after an
Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) sacrifice, Smith singled to center, plating both runners.
Dehmlow's two-run homer to left in the second knocked in Nash, who had singled, and made it 4-0 Augustana.
North Park got its only run on Emily Reczek's solo homer to center in the fourth, but the hosts responded with seven runs in the bottom half. Smith had two RBI singles in the frame and
Claire Weeks (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) chipped in another.
Smith retired the first two NPU batters in the fifth. Alyssa Aragon doubled to left, but was thrown out at third,
Sydney Ohrtmann (Freeport HS, Rockford, Ill.) to
Josie Smith (St. Francis HS, Wheaton, Ill.) to
Molly Wrenn (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) to end the game, which was shortened by the mercy rule.
In addition
Erin Smith's big game, Nash went 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Bautista was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Weeks went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Dehmlow homered in her only at-bat, drew two walks, scored twice and knocked in a pair.
Erin Smith improved to 2-7 with the win. NPU starter Rachael Feazelle (7-5) suffered the loss.
AUGUSTANA 1, NORTH PARK 0 (8)
Ranieri and North Park's Alyssa Malicki dueled it out through seven scoreless inning in the nightcap.
Augustana's best threats came in the top of the third and fifth innings, when they left runners stranded at second and third. NPU threatened in the bottom of the third. Nicole Donnawel led off with a double and was at third with one out, but stayed there when Ranieri got a popout and a strikeout to end the inning.
Each team stranded a runner at second in the seventh and the game went to extra innings.
Bautista singled with one out in the top of the eighth and moved to second on a North Park error. One out later, Ranieri singled her in with the game's only run. The freshman lefty then retired the side in order in the bottom half to seal the victory.
Ranieri (4-5) allowed four hits and walked none while fanning eight. Malicki (6-7) scattered eight hits and allowed just the unearned run in the eighth.
Ranieri, Ohrtmann and freshman
Morgan Bielfeldt (St. Viator HS, Chicago, Ill.) each had two hits for Kistler's bunch.
