Vikings defeat Concordia-Wisconsin 19-9

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana outscored Concordia-Wisconsin 7-1 in the last 10 minutes of the first half Sunday and went on to a 19-9 win at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach C.J. Holder's squad improved to 5-5 on the season, while the Falcons dropped to 2-4.

Hannah Beyer's unassisted goal at 16:45 of the first half put the visitors on top 4-2 and the score stayed that way for more than seven minutes. However, with 9:27 on the clock, Sandra Pielechaty (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored off an assist from Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) to get Augustana within one.

Less than a minute later, Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) tied it and 35 seconds after that, Claire Kim (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) scored to give the Vikings a lead they wouldn't surrender. Cecilio and Hettiger added two more goals in quick succession under five minutes to extend the advantage to 7-4.

Isabela Noyle scored at the 1:50 mark with Concordia a player down, but Augustana got goals from Hettiger and Cecilio in the final 33 seconds of the half to lead 9-5 at the break.

The Falcons cut the deficit to 9-7 with goals by Asiana Cothran and Savannah Schweiger to start the second stanza, but the Vikings tallied nine of the next 10 to pull away. Senior defender Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) started the onslaught with her first career goal and Sydney Rector (Fishers HS, Fishers, Ind.) (three) and Hettiger (two) accounted for the next five Augustana goals with only a score by Concordia's Olivia Niego interrupting the run.

Hettiger scored just inside eight minutes off an assist from Pielechaty to trigger the running clock at 18-8. Kat Oryszczyn countered with a goal at 6:22 to stop it temporarily, but Sinclaire Lucero (Helix HS, Lemon Grove, Calif.) scored with 2:47 to play to account for the final.

Lucero had the Vikings' first goal of the contest as well, answering one by Oryszczyn off the opening draw. Oryszczyn added a free position goal seven minutes in and Cecilio tied it at 2-2 a minute later. Oryszczyn and Beyer had the next two tallies before Augustana went on its tear.

Plenty of Vikings had big days offensively. Hettiger and Cecilio each scored five times and Hettiger added a pair of assists. Pielechaty had two goals and four assists and Rector three goals and two helpers. Cecilio had game highs of seven draw controls and 10 ground balls and Pielechaty forced three turnovers.

Oryszczyn led the Falcons with four goals.

Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded nine saves in goal, while her Concordia counterpart, Mallory Gurin, was credited with eight.

The Vikings hit the road for Kenosha, Wisconsin and a 1:00 p.m. date with Carthage on Saturday, April 17.
