ELMHURST, Ill. – Elmhurst controlled the second and third quarters Saturday on its way to a 16-10 win over Augustana at Langhorst Field. The Vikings fell to 4-4 on the season and 0-2 in the CCIW, while the Bluejays improved to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference.
Trailing 6-4 at the eight-minute mark of the second quarter, the hosts scored six straight goals and then added a 4-0 run in the third period to go up 14-8 before trading goals with Augustana over the final 18 minutes.
The teams traded goals in the first 10 minutes, with Bluejays Ben Luke and Andrew Frerich answering respective scores by
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and
Jack Preston (Morton HS, Morton, Ill.). Consecutive tallies by
Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Elijah Graesser (Wauwatosa West HS, Milwaukee, Wis.) gave the Vikings a 4-2 edge before Luke beat the first-quarter gun to cut Elmhurst's deficit to one.
Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge Ill.) scored off a
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) assist to start the second quarter and after Frerich answered, Preston's second goal of the day put Augustana up 6-4. Frerich's third goal of the afternoon began a streak of six straight Bluejay scores. Luke's tally just inside the one minute mark put Elmhurst up 10-6 before Moore answered in the final half-minute to make it 10-7 at intermission.
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) took the second-half faceoff and went straight in to beat Bluejay goalie Jake Delgado and get the Vikings within two. Elmhurst responded however. Goals by Cullen Nordeman bookended a 4-0 run that gave the hosts a 14-8 lead with 2:47 left in the period.
The scoring paced slowed the rest of the way, with Calabrese and Moore finding the cage for Augustana and Frerich and Marcus Yandall scoring for the Bluejays.
Moore finished with two goals and an assist and Preston and Calabrese also had two goals apiece. Calabrese won 19 of 28 faceoffs and collected a game-high 13 ground balls.
Pierceson Mapes (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) and
Paul Huber (Oak Park & River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.) each caused three turnovers.
Luke and Frerich each scored four goals for Elmhurst, with Yandall and Nordeman adding three apiece. Ben Berke had three assists.
Goalie
Cameron Duffy (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) recorded eight saves for the Vikings and Delgado turned away 15 Augustana shots.
