Vikings drop CCIW opener to Illinois Wesleyan

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Illinois Wesleyan took control with six consecutive goals in an 8½-minute stretch of the first half Thursday and went on to a 14-8 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 4-3 on the season and 0-1 in the CCIW, while the Titan improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the league.

Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) had a pair of unassisted goals and freshman Carson Ghys (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) scored off a Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) assist as Augustana took an early 3-1 lead. Michael Campagna tallied IWU's first goal.

With just under a minute to play in the opening quarter, Charles Hidestad scored off an assist from Carson Kiichle, starting a string of six straight Titan goals. Daniel Dickerson tied it at 3-3 with the first goal of the second quarter before the Kiichle brothers teamed up for two goals. Carson assisted on Connor's goal with IWU a man down and Connor returned the favor 32 seconds later with the Titans a man up. Nick Ceko's goal at 8:35 of the second quarter made it 6-3 and Connor Kiichle finished off the run at the 7:24 mark with an assist from Hildestad.

Moore parlayed a Teschke assist into the final goal of the half and the Vikings trailed 7-4 at intermission.

Moore opened the second half scoring as well. Freshman Elijah Graesser (Wauwatosa West HS, Milwaukee, Wis.) assisted on his goal in the first minute to make it 7-5, but the visitors answered with three in a row and Augustana would get no closer than three the rest of the way.

Moore added two more goals and Sam Shaver (Kettle Moraine HS, Delafield, Wis.) scored off a Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) assist, as the Vikings trailed 11-8 after three periods, but IWU scored all three fourth-quarter goals to account for the final.

Moore finished with six goals and Teschke with a pair of assists. Matt Pierson (Montini HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) had team highs of five caused turnovers and nine ground balls and Paul Huber (Oak Park River Forest HS, Oak Park, Ill.) caused four turnovers. Cameron Duffy had nine saves in 55 minutes in goal.

The Kiichle brothers and Ceko each scored three goals for the Titans. Max Bousky won 14 of 18 faceoffs and Will Harris recorded nine saves in goal.
