MEQUON, Wis. – Steve Robertson's (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) goal early in the fourth quarter snapped a 7-7 tie and
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) added two scores later in period, as Augustana defeated Concordia (Wis.) 10-8 at Fitting Field Saturday. Coach
Dan Torie's squad improved to 4-2 on the year, while the host Falcons dropped to 2-4.
The Vikings took an early 3-0 lead and never trailed in the contest, but Concordia fought back to tie it three times. The last came when Keijo Day scored off a assist from Taitum Priewe at 3:36 of the third quarter to make it 7-7. That's the way the period would end, but Robertson gave Augustana the lead (8-7) for good when he scored a minute and a half into the fourth.
A little over a minute later, Teschke added an insurance goal. When Day scored to pull his squad to within one (9-8) with 3:46 to play, it was Teschke who answered at the 1:14 mark to put the game on ice.
Freshmen
Carson Ghys (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and
Elijah Graesser (Wauwatosa West HS, Milwaukee, Wis.) sandwiched goals around one by Rob Robertson
(York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead 10 minutes in. Connor Peterson scored twice as the Falcons responded with three straight goals in a span of less than two minutes.
Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) parlayed a
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) assist into a goal that put Augustana up 4-3 after one quarter.
The teams traded goals in the second quarter, with the Vikings eventually taking a 6-5 lead to intermission.
Matt Pierson (Montini Catholic HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) and Teschke scored for Torie's outfit. Ryan LeFebvre's goal with nine seconds on the clock cut Concordia's deficit to one at the break.
Piewe scored with the Falcons a man up in the first minute of the third quarter to tie it at 6-6. Teschke's goal off a Graesser assist gave the guests the lead again before Day tied it one final time.
Augustana had significant advantages in shots (53-24) and ground balls (47-23) and turned it over 19 times to Concordia's 27.
Teschke led the offense with four goals and an assist.
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) won 14 of 18 faceoffs and snared a game-high 11 ground balls and goalie
