ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana scored the first goal Sunday, but Southwestern answered with four in a row and led the rest of the way, posting a 13-9 win at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings dropped to 3-4 on the season, while the visiting Pirates improved to 3-0. Next up for Coach C.J. Holder's squad is a Tuesday, March 23 date at Edgewood.
Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) parlayed an assist from
Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) into the game's first goal a minute in, but Deanna Hammes both started and capped a 4-0 Southwestern run with a pair of scores.
A Cecilio tally stemmed the tide before 11 scoreless minutes to end the half left the Pirates on top 4-2 at intermission.
The scoring pace picked up considerably in the second stanza. Southwestern's Natasha Perez-Krause and Liana Collins bracketed goals around one by Cecilio before consecutive Hettiger scores pulled the Vikings to within 6-5.
The teams swapped the next eight goals, with a
Claire Kim (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) score eventually cutting the Augustana deficit to 10-9 with four minutes to play. That would be the Vikings' last gasp however, as the Pirates put the final three scores of the afternoon on the board.
Hettiger led the hosts with four goals and Cecilio tallied three, along with two assists and nine draw controls.
Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) made nine saves in goal and collected six ground balls.
Southwestern was led by Perez-Krause and Collins, who had four and three goals, respectively. Goalie Sofia Valdespino stopped eight Viking shots.
