FOND du LAC, Wis. – Despite outshooting Marian by a 52-48 margin Saturday, Augustana came up on the short end of a 23-10 score at Smith Field. The Vikings fell to 3-2 on the year, while the host Sabres improved to 3-1.
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored off a
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) assist in the first minute to put Coach
Dan Torie's squad on top 1-0. After Marian's Nick Klotz and Jackson Allsop answered over the next five minutes,
Steve Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) scored with an assist from Moore at 7:09 of the first quarter to pull the Vikings even at 2-2.
However, when Sabre Nate Hwte scored less than a minute later, Marian had the lead for good. With eight seconds left in the first quarter, Erik Horman answered a goal by
Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge Ill.) to give the hosts a 6-3 edge. They added the first five goals of the second period, including two with a man advantage, to go up 11-3. Finn Maloney's goal gave the Sabres a 12-4 lead at intermission.
Freshman
Carson Ghys (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) and
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) sandwiched goals around one by Horman in the first 7½ minutes of the third quarter, but Marian responded with three straight scores to extend the margin to double digits (16-6). The second of two Forsythe goals less than a minute apart pulled Augustana to within 17-8 after three quarters.
Calabrese and
Matthew Lampasona (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) scored early in the fourth, but the Sabres tallied the final five goals of the game.
Forsythe's three goals led the Vikings. Moore had three assists. Calabrese won 18 of 27 faceoffs and snared a game-high 14 ground balls—just one off his school record.
Cameron Duffy (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) went 46 minutes in goal and recorded seven saves.
Malone had seven goals and Horman five for Marian. Starting goalie Cameron Nevins logged 11 saves in three quarters of action.
Next up for Torie's bunch is a March 27 contest versus Concordia in Mequon, Wisconsin.
