MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Shane Forsythe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored with 19 seconds to play Wednesday, lifting Augustana to an 8-7 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering at Viets Field. Coach
Dan Torie's Vikings moved to 3-1 on the season, while the host Raiders fell to 0-6.
Forsythe's goal capped a furious Viking rally that saw them erase a 6-3 deficit over the final 15 minutes.
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) scored just before the gun at the end of the third quarter, drawing Augustana to within 6-4.
Moore parlayed an assist from
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) into a goal with 13:44 left and Forsythe assisted on Teschke's equalizer at the 9:20 mark. Freshman
Carson Ghys (Warren HS, Gurnee, Ill.) finished off a 4-0 Viking run and gave them their first lead (7-6), scoring with 7:10 remaining off an assist from
Bob Robertson (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.).
The teams were scoreless for more than four minutes until MSOE's Erik Nelson tied it a 7-7 with a goal at 2:50. After winning the faceoff, Augustana peppered Raider goalie Sean Finneran with five shots over the next 2½ minutes before Forsythe finally found the back of the net with 19 seconds left off an assist from Teschke.
Matt Pierson (Montini HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) controlled the ensuing faceoff and the Vikings were able to run out the clock.
MSOE scored the game's first two goals and maintained the lead until Teschke tied it in the fourth quarter. Max Jenney's goal at 1:07 of the second quarter gave the Raiders a 3-1 advantage at the half. Tanner Whipps opened the third period with a goal that gave the hosts their biggest lead (4-1) and his second of the game with, with two minutes left in the quarter, matched that largest margin (6-3).
Teschke finished with game highs of three goals and two assists. Moore scored twice.
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) went 10-for-15 on faceoffs and collected a game-high nine ground balls. Pierson, Forsythe, and freshman
Zach Reser (Valley Center HS, Valley Center, Calif.) each forced a pair of turnovers.
Cameron Duffy (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) went the distance in goal, recording seven saves.
The Vikings will try to extend their winning streak to four games when they travel to Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on Saturday, March 20 to face Marian at 1:00 p.m.
