ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomore
Macy Beinborn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) tied a school record with eight three-point field goals and scored a career-high 31 points Saturday to help lead Augustana to a 69-67 win over Carroll at Van Male Field House. The Vikings improved to 4-5 on the season and in the CCIW, while the hosts fell to 6-5 overall and in the league.
Beinborn scored nine points to help Augustana take a 12-7 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter. The Pioneers responded with an 8-2 run to take the lead before
Caitlin Nicholson (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) converted a field goal and one of two free throws to put the visitors up 17-15. Katie Rohner's conventional three-point play with 10 seconds left put Carroll up 18-17 after one.
The hosts stretched their lead to 22-17 on an Elizabeth Behrndt bucket, but Beinborn drilled her third and fourth treys of the game as the Vikings answered with eight straight. Another Behrndt layup gave the Pioneers a 26-25 advantage before two more Beinborn threes keyed an 11-2 Augustana run to close the half. Beinborn tallied 21 points and a half-dozen three pointers and the Vikings took a 36-28 lead to the break.
Augustana maintained its lead throughout the third quarter, although Carroll trimmed the deficit to 48-47 on a Katie Evans three-pointer with 1:11 on the clock. Beinborn's eighth triple beat the third-quarter buzzer to give her team a 51-47 advantage.
Lauren Hall's (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) three-pointer in the first minute of the fourth quarter extended the margin to seven (54-47), but the Pioneers responded with a 9-2 run to tie it at 56-all on a pair of Rohner free throws with 7:08 to play. After two more ties, Carroll regained the lead on another Evans three at the 4:31 mark. The hosts still led 65-62 on a Behrndt layup with 2:34 to play, but Hall scored at 2:06 to get the Vikings to within a point. Two defensive stops later, Coach
Mark Beinborn called a timeout with 33.5 seconds left.
Out of the break, senior
Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Milan, Ill.) drove the left baseline for a layup that gave the Vikings a 66-65 lead and, after a Pioneer timeout, made a diving steal with 7.5 seconds left. After another timeout, Edell was fouled and converted both free throws to make it 68-65 Augustana. With 0.7 seconds on the clock, Evans was fouled attempting a three-pointer, but could convert just two of her three free throws. Hall rebounded the third and was fouled just before the final buzzer. She made one of two charity tosses to account for the final.
Beinborn connected on 11 of 19 from the field, including eight of 16 from beyond the arc to tie the program single-game record that Hall set last year. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Hall added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds and Edell dished out nine assists. Behrndt and Rohner led five Pioneers in double figures with 14 points each.
The Vikings finished 24 of 58 (.414) from the field, 11 of 33 (.333) from three-point range and 10 of 15 (.667) from the free throw line. Carroll shot .407 (24-59) from the floor, .276 (8-29) from long range and .611 (11-18) at the foul line. Augustana had a 40-22 edge on the glass, but committed 23 turnovers to 10 for the Pioneers.
Beinborn's crew is now tentatively scheduled to face North Park in CCIW Tournament quarterfinal action on Thursday March 4. The sixth-seeded Vikings from Rock Island will travel to Chicago to take on their namesakes with tipoff scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
