Carroll finishes strong to defeat Vikings in CCIW quarterfinals

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Carroll used a 13-0 third-quarter run to get back in the game Thursday and then outscored Augustana 11-5 in the final three minutes to capture the teams' CCIW Tournament quarterfinal by a score of 67-61 at Van Male Field House. The Vikings finish the year 4-6, while the Pioneers move on to the semifinals with a record of 7-5.

Augustana got a Macy Beinborn (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) three-pointer and a Lauren Hall (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) layup to stretch a 35-30 halftime lead to 40-30 with seven minutes left in the third quarter. Carroll's Theresa Wichser's had a trio of three-pointers in the next minute and a half to cut the Pioneer deficit to 40-39. Brooke Foster gave the hosts the lead with a bucket and then added two free throws to finish off a 13-0 burst and make it 43-40. The Vikings answered with a Kylie Jozwik (Lakes HS, Lindenhurst, Ill.) trey and a Caitlin Nicholson (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) layup to lead 45-43 after three periods.

Augustana extended its advantage to four twice early in the fourth, the second time on a three by freshman Linnea Johansen (Parkway South HS, Manchester, Mo.) with 7½ minutes to play. However, a Foster triple and Katie Evans' bucket put Carroll back on top. A Jozwik three tied it at 54-all and two Hall free throws with 3:26 remaining pulled the Vikings even again at 56-all, but Katie Rohner had consecutive field goals as the Pioneers grabbed the lead for good. Augustana cut it to three twice, but Carroll converted three of four free throws in the final half-minute to seal the win.

Johansen and sophomore Gabriela Loiz (Alleman HS, Davenport, Iowa) each scored seven points to help give Coach Mark Beinborn's squad an 18-17 lead after one period.

The second quarter saw four ties and six lead changes before a Beinborn three-pointer and a Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Milan, Ill.) jumper sent the visitors to the locker room with a 35-30 lead.

Loiz finished with 14 points, six rebounds and four assists. Johansen added 11 points and six boards. Edell, the Vikings' lone senior, had eight points and a game-high six assists in her final contest. Hall finished with a game-high 11 rebounds. Rohner led the Pioneers with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Wichser drilled five treys in eight attempts for 15 points.

Augustana shot .355 (22-62) from the field .323 (10-31) from three-point range and .700 (7-10) from the free throw line. Carroll hit 25 of 66 (.379) field goal attempts, including nine of 30 (.300) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers were eight of 12 (.667) at the charity stripe. The Vikings won the battle of the boards by a 39-32 margin and committed 14 turnovers to just seven for the hosts.
