KENOSHA, Wis. – Augustana women's soccer (6-5, 3-2). traveled to Carthage (3-8, 1-2) this evening and left Kenosha with a narrow victory.
The Vikings and Firebirds battled through a tough and scoreless first half before any significant action occurred.
In the 54
th-minute, a strike from
Kayla Garcia after a
Liesl Whitener assist finally broke the scoreless tie and put the Vikings in front. Augustana would maintain their narrow advantage with tough defensive play and secured the 1-0 victory.
Despite coming up short, Carthage did outshoot Augustana 13-10 overall and attempted twice as many corner kicks as the Vikings.
Garcia's goal was her only shot of the match.
Maeve Sheridan attempted the most shots on the squad with five, but none were on target. Whitener also played her typical aggressive style and made two shots with one on goal.
Janey Castoe recorded a shutout in goal for Auguie while saving two shots.
Augustana will be back at home for their next game when the Coe College Kohawks visit for a non-conference match on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
