ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women's soccer team (9-7, 5-3) played their way into the CCIW Tournament with a victory over the North Park Vikings (3-14-1, 0-8) in the final game of the regular season.
Augustana and North Park played through a scoreless first half that, despite the lack of goals, was dominated by the home team. Augie led North Park in shots 12-2 after the first 45 minutes.
Augustana finally settled into a groove after the halftime break. In the 46
th-minute,
Anna Bross delivered a strike from the left side of the box to the back of the net to break the scoreless tie. Just a few minutes later, in the 49
th,
Liesl Whitener lobbed a corner kick into the box that was promptly headed in by
Molly Fank for her first score of the season.
North Park did show some signs of life late in the game when Agnes Bohlin scored an unassisted goal in the 79
th-minute to trim the Viking lead in half.
Intelligent play down the stretch from Augustana stifled any other chances for North Park and secured the 2-1 win and berth in the CCIW Tournament.
Overall, Augie led North Park 17-4 in shots and 10-2 in shots on goal. Six of Augustana's attempts came from
Kayla Garcia and four from Whitener.
In goal,
Janey Castoe only recorded one save but earned the win while playing all 90 minutes. Theresa Weiss saved eight shots in the loss for North Park.
Augustana will travel to Wheaton for their next match. The Vikings and Thunder will face off on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at 7 P.M. in the first round of the conference tournament.
