Women's soccer loses double overtime heartbreaker in CCIW semifinals

The Vikings fell to the top-seeded Thunder in the 101st minute

WHEATON, Ill. -- Tori Seeland sent a goal from 25 yards out into the right corner in the 101st minute of the CCIW Tournament semifinals on Wednesday to defeat the Augustana Vikings women's soccer team in a thrilling double overtime contest by a score of 2-1. The Vikings see their season come to an end with a 9-8 record.

Augie began the game with the early advantage after scoring the game's first goal late in the first half off of the foot of Lexi Dominguez. The score was set up by Carson Keklik, who sent a diagonal pass through the middle of the box to the left-center side. Dominguez took the ball and sent it into lower left corner from about 17 yards out. The Vikings led 1-0 at halftime. Augie also held an advantage in shots 8-6 after 45 minutes of play.

The Thunder responded with an aggressive attack in the second, resulting in a plus-seven margin in shots in just the second half. Nearly ten minutes in, the game was equalized on a shot from Audrey Sexson from 12 yards out. Despite seeing constant pressure throughout the frame, the Vikings defense held strong to keep the game scored after 90 minutes of action.

Augustana came out in the first extra session with a much more pressing approach, able to play even with the Thunder in possessing the ball. The home team saw one additional shot than the Vikings in the first overtime, but the game remained tied. Wheaton converted their first scoring opportunity in the second overtime just 90 seconds in, ending the game with a 2-1 score to advance them to the CCIW Tournament championship.

Overall, Wheaton held a 19-12 advantage in shots through nearly 102 minutes of play. The Vikings were led with four shots apiece from both Dominguez and Kayla Garcia, with Dominguez seeing all four of her attempts on target. Janey Castoe ended the night with four saves in net.

With the loss, the Vikings conclude the 2021 season over .500 with a 9-8 record after finishing 5-3 in conference. It is the third straight season the team has posted a winning record.
