ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana men's soccer team's offense caught fire Wednesday night at Thorson-Lucken Field, defeating the visiting Carroll Pioneers in a rescheduled CCIW contest by a final score of 6-1.
Sebastian Gabrielson scored both of his goals in the opening half to help lift the Vikings (5-10, 1-6) to a 4-0 lead at the halftime break. The first score of the contest came off of a pass from Gabrielson as he headed a long ball in front of the net over to
Hannes Hemgren who knocked in the game's first goal. In the 35th minute,
Justin Kornas made it 2-0 off of an assist from
Jarrett Baumgartner, jump-starting a three-goal stretch over the course of the next seven-plus minutes. Gabrielson connected on the final two goals of the half, both on passes from Hemgren, to make it a four-goal game at the break. Despite the differential on the scoreboard, the Vikings were outshot 9-8 in the opening 45 minutes.
Less than five minutes into the second, Rahand Shakar notched his first goal of the year, pushing a long strike by the visiting goalie. Just two minutes later, another member saw their first score of the season as
Leo Krause put in a pass from
Tyler Markell to make it 6-0, their largest lead of the season. The Pioneers (8-7-1, 1-5-1) found themselves on the scoreboard later on in the second half to make the final score end at 6-1 in favor of the Vikings.
Carroll posted another plus-margin in shots in the second and finished with an 18-14 advantage for the game in that category. The Vikings scored on six of their seven shots on target in the contest, while the Pioneers saw a total of seven shots on goal as well.
Frankie Baio had five saves for Augie.
Niko Ragano also added a stop. Gabrielson tallied seven shots on offense. Krause was the only other member to have more than one attempt.
With the win, Augustana improves to 5-10 on the season and 1-6 in CCIW play. The team will close out their year on Saturday, October 30 at home when they host the North Park Vikings, Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m from Thorson-Lucken Field.
