ROCK ISLAND, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated Saturday afternoon in their final game of the 2021 season, falling to the CCIW regular season champion North Park Vikings by a score of 7-1 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
The visiting Vikings saw a steep advantage in shots in the opening half at 11-1, but sound defense from Augie kept them in the game after 45 minutes of action. North Park found the back of the net eight minutes in for the contest's first score, adding another in the 14th minute to quickly make it 2-0. Augustana answered with a score in 30th minute off of the foot of
Jarrett Baumgartner to inch closer as the two teams went into halftime with the 2-1 margin in favor of North Park. The goal from Baumgartner, his fifth of the season, was just the third goal surrendered by North Park in CCIW action this year.
In the second half, the visitors enjoyed an offensive explosion, scoring five times on 17 second half shots. Augie saw just one shot attempt their way in the second as continuous pressure from their opponent prevented any chance of a comeback threat.
Collin Mendoza joined Baumgartner with the other recorded shot for Augustana in this one as North Park held a 28-2 advantage in that category.
Frankie Baio finished with nine saves in net.
With the loss, Augustana ends the 2021 season with a 5-11 record overall and 1-7 in conference.
