Men's soccer drops conference contest to Illinois Wesleyan

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated on the road on Saturday, falling to the Illinois Wesleyan Titans by a final score of 5-2.

The Titans struck four times in the opening half, with the first coming just 22 seconds into the contest. Three more goals came in before the 20-minute mark as IWU controlled the first half offensively, posting an 11-1 margin in the shots category. The 4-0 lead was good through halftime.

Augie found themselves on the board early in the second half as Sebastian Gabrielson's fourth goal of the year cut the deficit to three in the 56th minute. The Titans answered two minutes later and earned the score back to stretch the game back out to a four-goal lead at 5-1. The Vikings saw a Johannes Chammas shot go into the back of the net in the 80th minute, but it was not enough as Illinois Wesleyan held on to the 5-2 victory. Augustana saw a much more efficient offensive attack in the final 45 minutes, posting seven shots.

Gabrielson led the Vikings with three total shots in the game. Rahand Shakar also tallied two as the other member to secure multiple attempts. Benjamin Samuelson snagged nine saves in net for Augustana.

With the loss, the Vikings fall to 4-8 on the season and 0-6 in the CCIW. The team well step out of league play for the first of two non-conference matchups beginning on Tuesday, October 19th when they host the UW-Platteville Pioneers at Thorson-Lucken Field. Kickoff is slated for 7:00 p.m.
