ELMHURST, Ill. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated on the road Wednesday in a CCIW contest with Elmhurst, falling to the Bluejays by a score of 2-0.
It was a fairly balanced offensive attack both ways in the opening 45 minutes, with the home team posting a 6-4 advantage in shots after one half of the play. The Bluejays led 1-0 at the break after scoring the game's first goal in the 24th minute. Elmhurst held a 3-2 margin in shots on goal at halftime.
In the second half, the Vikings once again saw their fair share of opportunities, tallying five shots, three of which were on target. The Bluejays doubled up their lead just over two minutes into the second period to make it 2-0, holding onto to that score all the way until the final whistle. Augustana saw a stretch of ten minutes halfway through the frame where they put up three shot attempts during that span, but were unable to get one into the back of the net.
Hannes Hemgren led the Vikings with a team-high three shots, followed by
Jarrett Baumgartner with two, both on target.
Frankie Baio snagged five saves in net for Augie.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 4-7 overall and 0-5 in the CCIW. The team will be back in action on Saturday, October 16th when they hit the road to take on Illinois Wesleyan. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
