KENOSHA, Wis. -- The Augustana Vikings men's soccer team was defeated in a conference road game Saturday night, falling to the Carthage Firebirds by a score of 5-1.
The Firebirds scored three goals in the first half to take control of this one, seeing a score go into the net just 45 seconds into the game. The home team added another just five minutes later before grabbing a third in the 15th minute. That score held throughout the remainder of the first half. Carthage posted 14 shots in the opening half compared to Augie's two.
Carthage continued to put pressure on Augustana, finishing the game with 27 total shots, nine of which were on target. The Firebirds scored their fourth goal of the contest nearly 15 minutes into the second half when Mickey Reilly, who scored the first goal for Carthage, knocked in another to make it 4-0. They added one in the 64th minute. Augie got on the board shortly after the last goal scored from Carthage as
Hannes Hemgren took a pass from
Sebastian Gabrielson in the 66th minute to cut the margin to 5-1. That score remained the same until the final whistle.
The Vikings tallied seven shots on the evening, all coming from a different player. Hemgren, Gabrielson, and
Jarrett Baumgartner had the three shots on goal for Augie.
Benjamin Samuelson received the start in net and grabbed four saves.
With the loss, Augustana drops to 4-6 overall and 0-4 in CCIW play. The team is back in action on Wednesday, October 13th when they visit Elmhurst. Start time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
