Sophomore Kathryn Hettiger had five
goals Saturday in Augustana's 11-8 win
over Concordia in Mequon, Wisconsin.
MEQUON, Wis.— Sophomore
Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) scored five goals Saturday to lead Augustana to an 11-8 win over Concordia at Fitting Field. Coach C.J. Holder's outfit improved to 1-1 on the year, while the Falcons fell to 0-2.
After more than 10 minutes of scoreless play, freshman
Cassidy Petrie (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) gave the Vikings the lead with an assist from Hettiger. Concordia tied it with a Megan McPike goal and took its only lead (3-2) on a tally by Kat Oryszczyn.
Senior
Lauren Amella (Whitney Young HS, Chicago, Ill.) answered with consecutive free position goals and the Vikings would lead the rest of the way. Petrie scored with 5:47 left in the first half and
Sandra Pielechaty's (Taft HS, Chicago, Ill.) goal at 3:39 made it 5-2 Augustana. McPike scored in the final minute to make it 5-3 at the break.
Hettiger scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half. She got assists from
Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) and Amella before completing the triad with a free position tally that put the Vikings up 8-3 with 20 minutes to play.
McPike kept the Falcons in the game with two more goals, but Hettiger sandwiched a pair around one by Concordia's Callie Neumann and Augustana led 10-6 with 10 minutes left. Falcon Jenny Quinn traded goals with Pielechaty and then scored with two minutes left to account for the final.
Amella, Pilechaty and Petrie each added two goals to Hettiger's five. Cecilio controlled 10 draws and shared the team ground ball high (three) with
Juliette Camara (Spoon River Valley HS, Martel, France). Camara and
Elizabeth Cook (Minooka HS, Joliet, Ill.) each caused a pair of turnovers. Junior
Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded four saves in goal.
McPike finished with four goals for the Falcons and goalie Kinsey Weyer made five saves.
Next up for Holder's bunch is a Wednesday, March 11 home date with Loras. First draw at Thorson-Lucken Field is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
