Trever Moore had three goals and two
assists Saturday, but Augustana fell 10-8
to Hope at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Hope outscored Augustana 4-1 in the fourth quarter Saturday to come from behind for a 10-8 win at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 0-4 on the season, while the Flying Dutchmen were playing their 2020 season opener.
Trailing 7-6 to start the final period, Hope got the equalizer from Rocco Mulroni with 12:18 to play and a go-ahead goal from Jake Maibuecher at the 10:30 mark. Jack Radzville assisted on both scores. A
Matt Pierson (Montini HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) goal with Augustana on the man advantage tied the contest with 8:46 to play, but a tally by Liam Cunningham put the Flying Dutchmen back on top 9-8 with 4:14 remaining and Andrew Pavey added an insurance goal with eight seconds left.
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) answered respective goals by Pavey and Radzville and the teams were tied 2-2 midway through the first quarter. Mularoni scored off a Radzville assist to give the Flying Dutchmen a 3-2 lead after one period.
The guests extended their advantage to 5-2 with goals by Nathaniel Hentschel and Alex Goodall early in the second quarter. However, the Vikings responded with a pair of in short order, as
Sam Shaver (Kettle Moraine, Delafield, Wis.) and
Dylan Drawer (Conant HS, Roselle, Ill.) both scored off assists from Moore to make it 5-4 Hope with 8:21 to play in the half. Augustana outshot Hope 11-3 over the last eight minutes but couldn't find the back of the net and trailed by one at intermission.
Mulroni's goal to open the second half pushed the Flying Dutchmen edge to 6-4, but the hosts responded with three straight to take their first lead of the afternoon. Moore's unassisted tally came first. Then Pierson parlayed a Teschke assist into the game-tying goal with the Vikings a man up. Finally, Moore scored again without the benefit of an assist to give Augustana its first lead at 7-6 and that's the way the third period ended.
Moore led the Vikings offensively with three goals and a pair of assists. Pierson added two goals, snared four ground balls and caused three turnovers.
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) went 11 of 16 on faceoffs and had a team-high five ground balls.
Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) played all but 22 seconds in goal and recorded a dozen saves.
Mulroni scored three times for Hope. John Shea relieved Ian Bosman in goal and made five saves to earn the win.
The Flying Dutchmen held advantages of 44-38 in shots and 39-24 in ground balls. Augustana put 24 shots on goal to 22 for the visitors, but was successful on just six of 20 clear attempts, compared to 13 of 21 for Hope.
