Freshman Maeve Sheridan
gives Augustana a 1-0 Saturday
at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana scored twice off set pieces in the first four minutes Saturday and rolled to a 5-1 win over Beloit at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Scott Mejia's Vikings improved to 4-0 on the year, while the Buccaneers fell to 0-5.
The hosts jumped in front in the second minute. Beloit keeper Audrey Ketterer punched a shot by junior
Karissa Gottardo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) over the crossbar resulting in a corner from the right side for senior
Allison Harvey (Wheaton Warrenville South HS). Junior
Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) got a piece of Harvey's kick and freshman
Maeve Sheridan (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) redirected it into the goal to make it 1-0.
Less than two minutes later, a Harvey free kick from the left side found Sigler, who headed it past Ketterer for her fourth goal of the season.
The visitors scored off a set piece of their own to cut the deficit in half in the 27th minute. Taking advantage of an Augustana foul just outside of the box, the Buccaneers' Makenna Downing put her free kick on frame. Viking keeper
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.) was there to turn it away, as well as a follow up by Taylor Goodyear. The Augustana defense couldn't clear however, and Mikaila Davis put her header into the left side of the goal to finish the play off.
Viking sophomore
Marcela Arreguin (Beloit Memorial HS, Beloit, Wis.) scored off a
Grace Bradley-Leon (Naperville Cenral HS, Naperville, Ill.) assist in the 39th minute and the hosts took a 3-1 lead to the locker room at intermission.
Augustana added a pair of goals in the second half. Sigler assisted on a goal by senior
Lauren Muzzalupo (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) in the 54th minute and freshman
Kayla Garcia (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) closed out the scoring with an unassisted tally in minute 79.
The Vikings outshot their guests by a 27-5 margin, putting 15 on frame to five for Beloit. Augustana took seven of eight corners in the match and were called for 10 fouls to seven for the Buccaneers.
Ion finished with four saves, while Ketterer and Connor Keegan-Lloyd combined for 10 Beloit saves.
Next up for Mejia's bunch is a 7:00 p.m. match versus Coe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday, September 17.
