Freshman Maeve Sheridan's
goal gave Augustana a 1-0
win over UW-Platteville
Wednesday at Thorson-
Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana freshman
Maeve Sheridan (Mother McAuley HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored the only goal of the match Wednesday, lifting the Vikings over Wisconsin-Platteville at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Scott Mejia's side improved to 3-0 on the season, while the visiting Pioneers dropped to 0-4-1. Augustana will be back in action on Saturday, September 14, hosting Beloit in a 1:30 p.m. match at Thorson-Lucken.
Each side got off two shots in the opening 23:19, including a header by junior
Grace Sigler (Rock Island HS, Rock island, Ill.) that was turned away by UWP keeper Kathryn Flaherty and an attempt by Pioneer Macie Alexa that was stopped by the Vikings'
Sydney Ion (Aquinas HS, La Crosse, Wis.).
Late in the 24th minute Sheridan took a feed from senior
Allison Harvey (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and launched a 25-yard blast over Flaherty and into the net for a 1-0 Augustana lead.
The hosts took the final three shots of the half, but only a try from junior
Sandra Camarillo (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) in the 39th minute was put on frame. Flaherty was there for the save and the score remained 1-0 as the teams went to the locker room.
The Vikings put half of their eight second-half shots on goal, but couldn't get one past Flaherty for some insurance. Sheridan's goal held up though, as Mejia's defense didn't allow the guests a single shot attempt in the second half.
Augustana finished with a 14-2 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in shots on goal. The Vikings took three corners to two for Platteville and committed eight fouls to four for the Pioneers. Neither side received a caution in the match.
Ion recorded one save, while Flaherty stopped six Augustana shots.
