BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Augustana received solid pitching efforts from
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) and
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) Sunday, but couldn't generate enough offense to knock off fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan. The Titans took both ends of the teams' CCIW doubleheader, 2-1 and 3-1. The Vikings dropped to 12-14 on the season and 1-3 in the CCIW, while IWU
Augustana senior Carly Wilson homered
twice in Sunday's doubleheader at Illinois
Wesleyan.
improved to 17-4 overall and 4-0 in the league.
Coach
Kris Kistler's club will be back in action on Wednesday, April 10, hosting Carroll for a twin bill at Carver Field beginning at 4:00 p.m.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 2, AUGUSTANA 1
Titan Ally Weigand handcuffed Augustana on two hits in the opener. She allowed just one baserunner through the first 6 2/3 innings—a bunt single by
Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) in the second.
Fredrickson allowed a runner past first base in just one inning—the third. Nicki Lewis and Jillian Runyon started the frame with singles and Brittany Murphy knocked both in with a two-out, two-run single to right center.
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) got the Vikings on the board with a two-out solo homer in the top of the seventh, but Weigand retired
Claire Weeks (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) to finish off the complete game.
Weigand faced just one batter more than the minimum, walking none and fanning nine on her way to her ninth win in 11 decisions. Fredrickson (4-4) was the though-luck loser. She went the distance and allowed six hits, walked one and struck out two.
ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 3, AUGUSTANA 1
The nightcap was nearly a carbon copy of the opener. IWU's Brea Walker was almost as effective as Weigand. She limited Augustana to just three hits and had her shutout spoiled by a Wilson solo homer as well.
Peine allowed just one baserunner through three innings before the Titans got to her for a pair of runs in the top of the fourth. Shelby Fulk had a one-out single, stole second and scored the game's first run on a Colleen Palczynski single. Palczynski scored on an error to give IWU a 2-0 lead.
The Titans added an insurance run in the sixth on a Julie Josten RBI single.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wilson homered for the third straight game—her fifth of the season—to get the Vikings on the board.
Walker set Augustana down in order in the bottom of the seventh to close out the complete game win. She walked none and fanned four and improved to 8-1 on the year.
Peine scattered seven hits in six innings, allowed three runs (two earned), walked none and struck out two. She suffered the loss, falling to 2-5 on the year.
Besides Wilson's homer, the Vikings' hits included a
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) double in the third and a Weeks single in the sixth.
