Vikings drop twin bill to Carroll

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Carroll rode strong pitching efforts from Amanda Osterhus and Lexi Keminitzer to a doubleheader sweep of Augustana Tuesday at Carver Field. The Vikings fell to 12-16 overall and 1-5 in the CCIW, while the Pioneers improved to 17-10 overall and 4-2 in the conference.

Alyssa Klahn went 3-for-3 in Augustana's
game-two loss to Carroll Tuesday.

CARROLL 3, AUGUSTANA 2

Osterhus blanked Augustana through six innings and led 3-0 in the opener, but in the bottom of the seventh, Haley Ruch's (Lincoln-Way North HS, Frankfort, Ill.) one-out double, a Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) single and a Carroll error produced a run and brought Keminitzer out of the Pioneer pen. She coaxed a groundout, but another miscue allowed Falk to score and pull the Vikings to within a run. Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.)
stole second to get the potential tying run in scoring position, but Keminitzer retired Claire Weeks (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) for the final out.

The visitors took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Annika Graves led off the game with a single against Augustana starter Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.) and scored on Rosalie Jrolf's single to center.

Carroll gave Osterhus a pair of insurance runs in the sixth. Kelsey Edwards knocked in the first with a sacrifice fly and Jordan Wermund's RBI single gave the Pioneers a 3-0 advantage.

Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) had two of the Vikings' six hits.

Fredrickson gave up nine hits and three runs in 5 2/3 innings. She walked four and fanned one and took the loss, falling to 4-5 on the year. Osterhus improved to 9-5 with the win and Keminitzer picked up her second save.

CARROLL 5, AUGUSTANA 3

The teams traded runs in game two until the Pioneers took control with three in the bottom of the fifth.

Carroll got on the board with a run in the second. Jrolf led off with a single, moved to third when Keminitzer helped her own cause with a double, and scored on a Veronica Rodriguez sacrifice fly.

Augustana tied it when Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) led off the top of the third with a double and scored on a Ruch sacrifice fly.

A Jrolf double and a Rodriguez single in the bottom of the fourth put the Pioneers back on top, but the Vikings tied it 2-2 in the top of the fifth when Belo doubled and scored on an Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) single.

Smith came on in relief of starter Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) to start the fifth and Carroll took advantage of two Augustana errors to plate three unearned runs.

Klahn scored on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh, but reliever Kaylee Learman escaped further damage in closing things out.

Klahn finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored and Wilson went 2-for-3.

Peine allowed seven hits and two runs in four innings and Smith (2-3) suffered the loss despite not allowing an earned run. Keminitzer lasted five innings and earned her sixth win in as many decisions this year.

The Vikings are scheduled to host Monmouth in a doubleheader at Carver Field on Thursday, April 11 at 4:00 p.m.
