KENOSHA, Wis. – Nicole Bowman's short-handed goal with 2:40 to play Saturday lifted Carthage to a 13-12 win over Augustana at Art Keller Field. The Vikings fell to 5-10 on the season and 1-5 in the CCIW, while the Lady Reds improved to 5-8 overall and 2-3 in the league. Coach C.J. Holder's team will play its 2019 season finale versus Elmhurst at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 27 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
Senior Carla Bennett had game highs of
five goals, seven ground balls and seven
draw controls Saturday in a 13-12 loss at
Carthage.
Augustana fell behind 4-0 in the first five minutes, but battled all the way back over the next 45 minutes of playing time. The Vikings finally pulled even at 10-all on
Carla Bennett's (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) unassisted goal with 10:24 to play.
The teams traded goals the rest of the way. After Margaux Giacotto scored at the 7:50 mark to put Carthage up 11-10,
Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) answered with the tying goal at 4:38. Lady Red Jessie Gibson scored 13 seconds later, but Bennett's free position shot with 3:15 remaining tied it again at 12-all.
With the penalty that led to Bennett's goal still in effect, Bowman parlayed a Maddie Berni assist into the eventual game-winner with 2:40 on the clock. Gibson controlled the ensuing draw and, with the exception of a short Augustana possession, Carthage was able to run out the clock.
Four different Lady Reds scored in the game's first five minutes to stake Carthage to a 4-0 lead. Bennet scored twice and
Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) once as the Vikings pulled to within 4-3 at 12:58 of the first half.
The hosts tallied three of the next four goals before
Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) scored off a Bennett assist 33 seconds before halftime to send the teams to intermission with the Lady Reds on top 7-5.
In the second half, Bennett, McCabe and Lucnik scored for Augustana and Greigh Hoeft, Gibson and Berni for Carthage as the Lady Reds led 10-8 with 12 minutes to play. McCabe scored at 11:14 to draw the Vikings to within a goal before Bennett tied it for the first time since 0-0 50 seconds later.
Bennett finished with game highs of five goals, seven draw controls and seven ground balls. Lucnik and McCabe each scored three times. Gibson led Carthage with four goals.
Sophomore goalie
Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.), who fell to 5-10 with the loss, recorded 11 saves. Two Lady Red goalies stopped a total of three Augustana shots.
Carthage finished with advantages of 32-21 in shots, 24-15 in shots on goal and 22-20 in ground balls. The Vikings controlled 14 of 27 draws, but committed 31 turnovers to 19 for its hosts. The Lady Reds were called for 27 fouls to just seven for Augustana.
