Vikings fall 14-3 to Carroll at home


ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Clara Jelacic scored five goals Saturday to lead Carroll to a 14-3 win over Augustana at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings dropped to 4-9 on the season and 0-4 in the CCIW, while the Pioneers improved to 9-2 on the season and 3-0 in the conference.

with three caused turnovers Saturday in a
14-3 loss to Carroll at Thorson-Lucken Field.
 

Christina McCabe's (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) unassisted goal four minutes in put Augustana on top 1-0, but Michaela Johnson' free position goal three minutes later tied it and Jelacic scored her first of the afternoon at 15:23 of the first half to give Carroll the lead.
 
Arainnah Ritter and Jelacic each scored twice in a five minute span as the margin climbed to 6-1. Courtenay Karls, Johnson and Ritter added first-half goals and the visitors took a 9-1 lead to the break.
 
After the Pioneer lead reached 11-1, Bailey Aasen (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) scored off a Sydney Rector (Fishers HS, Fishers, Ind.) assist and after another Jelacic tally, McCabe assisted on a Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) goal with 8:42 to play. Jelacic and Alyssa Scharff scored for Carroll in the final 2:16 to account for the final.
 
Goalie Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) and Bennett each had four ground balls to lead the Vikings. Juliette Camara (Spoon River Valley HS, Martel, France) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Veitch recorded 11 saves and fell to 4-9 with the loss. Pioneer goalie Shelby Schoob stopped three Vikings shots.
 
Carroll finished with a 36-12 edge in shots, including 25-6 in shots on goal. The Pioneers won 15 of 19 draws, while Augustana won the ground ball battle 25-22. The visitors committed 26 turnovers and the Vikings 28.
 
Next up for Coach C.J. Holder's squad is a road date at Dubuque on Wednesday, April 17. First draw is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
