Freshman Cassie Kruse led Augustana
with five ground balls and three caused
turnovers Sunday in a 14-6 loss at Albion.

The hosts jumped on top in the first minute when Sheklow scored off a Jade Barrett assist. After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless play, Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) tied it with a free position goal, but Darcy Muns scored a minute later—the first of three straight Albion goals in three minutes.

Hettiger cut the Augustana deficit to 4-2 with a goal at the 14:47 mark of the first half, but the Britons answered with four straight from four different players. Bailey Aasen's (Park HS, Cottage Grove, Minn.) free position goal in the final minute sent the teams to halftime with Albion up 8-3.

Hettiger's tally off a Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) assist opened the second half scoring and pulled the Vikings to within 8-4, but the Britons strung together another 4-0 run to extended their advantage to 12-4 with 12 minutes remaining.

Bennett and Margaret Cecilio (Archbishop Mitty HS, San Jose, Calif.) tallied Augustana's final two goals, while Muns and Sheklow scored for Albion in the final six minutes.

Hettiger led the Vikings with three goals and added an assist. She and Cecilio each controlled four draws and Cassie Kruse (Hinsdale Central HS, Clarendon Hills, Ill.) had team highs of five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Goalie Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) recorded nine saves, while Briton Alexis Robinson had 11.

Albion led 33-23 in shots, 23-17 in shots on goal and 27-20 in ground balls and controlled 12 off 22 draws. The Britons committed 19 turnovers to 23 for Augustana.

The Vikings open CCIW play on Wednesday, April 3, hosting North Central at Thorson-Lucken Field beginning at 7:00 p.m.
