Vikings drop CCIW opener 16-7 to North Central


ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Jessica Deetjen scored five goals Wednesday as North Central defeated Augustana 16-7 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings fell to 4-6 on the season and 0-1 in the CCIW, while the Cardinals improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

The visitors jumped in front 4-0 in the first 7½ minutes behind three goals from Deetjen. Christina McCabe (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.) scored and then assisted on an Emily Lucnik (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) goal as Augustana cut the deficit in half.
 
North Central's Christina Truver and McCabe traded goals and the Vikings trailed just 5-3 with less than 14 minutes remaining in the first half, but the Cardinals scored three times in less than two minutes to extend their advantage to 8-3. Grace Steiner's goal with 3:12 left in the half gave North Central a 9-3 lead at intermission.
 
McCabe opened the second half scoring, but the Cardinals answered with three goals in a 2½ minute stretch to lead 12-4 at the 23-minute mark.
 
Augustana got goals from Lucnik, Carla Bennett (Marian Catholic HS, South Holland, Ill.) and Kathryn Hettiger (Carmel HS, Carmel, Ind.) the rest of the way, while North Central scored four times. Deetjen's tally with 2:49 remaining accounted for the final.
 
McCabe finished with team highs of three goals and two assists and Lucnik scored twice. Bennett controlled 11 draws and goalie Courtney Veitch (Lake Zurich HS, Hawthorn Woods, Ill.) collected five ground balls. Veitch finished with nine saves, while North Central's Camille Seghesio stopped six Viking shots.
 
The Cardinals finished with a 33-21 edge in shots and won the ground ball battle by a 28-22 margin. Behind Bennett's strong effort, the Vikings won 20 of 25 draws. Augustana committed 37 turnovers to 23 for their guests.
 
Coach C.J. Holder's squad is back in action on Saturday, April 6, hosting Illinois Wesleyan at Thorson-Lucken Field beginning at 1:00 p.m.
