ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – A dozen different Augustana players scored Wednesday, as the Vikings defeated Cornell 18-3 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The victory lifted Coach
Dan Torie's team to 4-5 on the year, while the Rams fell to 3-4.
Junior William Reece had a game-high
three goals Wednesday in Augustana's
18-3 win over Cornell at Thorson-Lucken
Field.
William Reece (Hudson HS, Hudson, Wis.) and
Matthew Lampasona (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) sandwiched goals around one by Cornell's Kyle Jussila and Augustana led 2-1 after one period.
The hosts broke things open in the second quarter.
Mark Teschke (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) tallied the Vikings' first goal of the period, Reece scored again and
Travis Hastings (Englewood HS, Littleton, Colo.) scored twice, as Augustana extended the lead to 9-1. Jussila scored just before the halftime buzzer to send the teams to halftime with the Vikings on top 9-2.
Reece tallied his third of the night in the third quarter and Torie's bunch led 12-3 going to the fourth.
It was all Augustana in the final period.
Joey Kreis (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) tallied a pair of goals and assisted on one by
John Calabrese (Maine South HS, Park Ridge, Ill.).
Dylan Drawer's (Conant HS, Roselle, Ill.) tally with 1:38 to play accounted for the final.
Reece led the Viking attack with three goals, Hastings, Kreis, Lampasona and
Trever Moore (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) each found the net twice.
Lee Whorwell (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) led the way with four assists, while Hastings and Teschke each added two.
Calabrese won 15 of 22 faceoffs and snared a game-high 10 ground balls. Hastings led Augustana with four caused turnovers.
Tommy Angelos (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) went 51 minutes in goal and stopped four Ram shots. He got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season.
The Vikings dominated statistically, piling up advantages of 37-17 in shots, 27-7 in shots on goal and 42-29 in ground balls. They committed 26 turnovers to 31 for Cornell.
Torie's club is back at home on Saturday, March 30, hosting Monmouth at Thorson-Lucken Field at 1:00 p.m.
