ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The hosts rode four solo homers to a 7-5 win over Illinois College Sunday at the Augustana Invitational, but fell 4-1 to Dubuque later in the day. The Vikings are 10-6 on the season heading into a Wednesday, March 27 doubleheader at Coe.
Senior Taylor Belo hit the first two homers
of her career Sunday at the Augustana
Invitational.
AUGUSTANA 7, ILLINOIS COLLEGE 5
Augustana jumped in front of Illinois College 4-0 after two innings and eventually held on for a 7-5 win in its first game of the day.
After
Cecelia Peine (Holt HS, Wentzville, Mo.) retired the Lady Blues in the top of the first, her teammates got her three runs in the bottom half.
Alyssa Klahn (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.) started things with a one-out solo homer to center.
Carly Wilson (Johnsburg HS, Ringwood, Ill.) singled and scored on an error and
Ashley Dehmlow (McHenry West HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) doubled in another run.
Klahn delivered
Claire Weeks (Dundee-Crown HS, Sleepy Hollow, Ill.) with a sacrifice fly in the second and the Vikings led 4-0.
Illinois College got to Peine for three in the top of the fourth. Ryleigh Keith's two-run double was the big hit.
Three solo homers extended Augustana's lead to 7-3.
Marissa Catalano (Lake Park HS, Medinah, Ill.) went deep in the bottom of the fourth and Wilson and
Taylor Belo (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) added round trippers in the fifth.
The Lady Blues put two on the board in the top of the seventh to pull within 7-5, but
Kelcie Fredrickson (Fisher HS, Foosland, Ill.)—who had relieved Peine in the fourth—closed things out, leaving a runner stranded at first.
The top seven hitters in the Viking lineup had at least one hit, with Wilson, Dehmlow and
Dina Falk (Lake Park HS, Bloomingdale, Ill.) stroking two each. Klahn drove in two runs and Wilson scored twice.
Fredrickson went the final 3 2/3 innings to improve to 3-2 with the win. She allowed three hits and two runs (one earned), walked one and fanned two. Illinois College starter Jess Feig lasted 4 2/3 innings and fell to 2-3 with the loss.
DUBUQUE 4, AUGUSTANA 1
Augustana managed just five hits against Dubuque hurlers Abby McBee and Kayla Breunig in its second game of the day.
Belo's second homer of the afternoon gave the Vikings a 1-0 lead after two innings, but the Spartans tied it with a run in the bottom of the fourth off starter
Erin Smith (Columbine HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and took the lead with two in the fifth off
Hope Moos (Lincoln HS, Hartsburg, Ill.).
Dubuque added an unearned run against Dehmlow in the sixth on a Kylee Biedermann sacrifice fly.
Breunig came on to start the fifth and worked around a pair of walks to escape unscathed. The only other base runner she allowed in a three-inning stint was a two-out single in the top of the seventh by Falk. Breunig earned the win, while Moos fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Falk had three of the Vikings' five hits.
