Vikings pull away from MSOE late


ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana scored three goals in the final 4:05 of the game Wednesday, breaking open a close contest to defeat Milwaukee School of Engineering 9-6 at Thorson-Lucken Field. The Vikings improved to 2-3 on the season, while the Engineers dropped to 0-4.

Matthew Lampasona's (Oak Forest HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) goal with 4:05 to play broke a 6-6 tie and William Reece (Hudson HS, Hudson, Ill.) scored less than a minute later to give Augustana an 8-6 advantage, its first multi-goal lead of the night. Trever Moore's (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) goal with 2:09 left accounted for the final.
 
The contest was tight throughout. The only multi-goal margin during the first 56 minutes came at 4-2 MSOE after Erik Nelson parlayed a Jack Fisher assist into a goal at 9:11 of the second quarter.
 
Travis Hastings (Englewood HS, Littleton, Colo.) scored twice for the Vikings in the first quarter and the period ended with the teams tied 2-2.
 
Fisher scored at 9:39 of the second and assisted on Nelson's goal 28 seconds later to put the Engineers on top 4-2. Hastings' third of the night cut Augustana's deficit to 4-3 at halftime.
 
The Vikings tied it on a Lampasona goal midway through the third period and Reece's tally with 2:56 left in the quarter gave them a 5-4 advantage. Wilson answered in the final minute and the teams went to the fourth quarter tied 5-5.
 
Jason Van Dyck (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Fisher traded goals early in the fourth before Augustana pulled away late.
 
Hastings finished with three goals and Reece and Lampasona two each. Matt Pierson (Montini HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Cameron Duffy (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) had 13 saves in goal and grabbed a game-high five ground balls. His MSOE counterpart, Colin Hall, stopped 16 Viking shots.
 
The hosts finished with a 46-32 advantage in shots, but the Engineers led 37-36 in ground balls and won 11 of 17 faceoffs. Augustana committed 28 turnovers to 31 for MSOE.
 
Next up for Coach Dan Torie's squad is a trip to Holland, Michigan to face Hope at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15.
