Senior Matt Allen scored twice
Saturday, as Augustana defeated
Millikin 2-0 at Thorson-Lucken Field.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior
Matt Allen (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) scored twice in the second half Saturday to lead Augustana to a 2-0 win over Millikin at Thorson-Lucken Field. Coach
Mick Regan's outfit improved to 4-5-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in the CCIW, while the Big Blue fell to 5-6-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.
Neither side created much offense in the first half. There were a total of just five shots taken—three by Millikin and two by the Vikings. Two of the Big Blue's were put on frame, but turned away by senior
Jeremy Klaber (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.).
The opening 45 minutes did see a lot of whistles, with a total of 17 fouls called, including 11 on the hosts. Millikin received two of the three cautions issued.
Klaber made two more saves early in the second half and the Big Blue's Jon Kuebler returned the favor, stopping a
Salah Aghlaf (Sabrine HS, Casablanca, Morocco) shot in the 50th minute. However, in minute 51, Allen put in his own corner kick to give Augustana a 1-0 advantage.
The Vikings kept the pressure on, as Aghlaf squeezed off shots in minutes 55 and 56. The first was blocked and Kuebler made the save on the second. In minute 58, Allen struck again, this time with assists from Aghlaf and junior
Justin Murphy (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.). The tally was Allen's team-leading fourth of the season.
Augustana's defense would allow just three Millikin shots the rest of the way. Klaber saved two of them, including Andreas Raaket's try in the 90th minute.
Klaber finished with six saves while posting his fourth shutout of the year. Kuebler recorded three saves.
The Big Blue put six of their 10 shots on frame to five of nine for the Vikings. Millikin took five of the six corners in the match. Augustana was called for 18 fouls and issued four cautions, while the guests received two cautions and were whistled for 13 fouls.
Regan's squad is scheduled to host a match versus Wisconsin-Platteville on Wednesday, October 23. Kickoff at Thorson-Lucken is slated for 7:00 p.m.
